31 Workers Rescued in Los Angeles Tunnel Collapse

On July 9, 2025, a partial collapse at a $700 million wastewater tunnel project in South Los Angeles trapped 27 workers, with four additional workers entering to assist in a daring rescue effort, all safely extracted within an hour by the Los Angeles Fire Department with no reported injuries. The incident, the first major accident in the 7-mile, 18-foot-wide tunnel’s two-year construction, has sparked a comprehensive investigation into safety protocols and structural integrity. Mayor Karen Bass commended the rapid response but stressed the need for stricter oversight to prevent future incidents.
